A new Banksy appeared on the streets of London in response to “the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.”
The tone of Banksy’s new artwork is a bit cynical, as are most of Banksy’s works. In this one, the London Metro Police are welcoming Basquiat to the city by frisking him and writing him a ticket for vandalism. Banksy likes to point out hypocrisy which, in this case, is the Barbican’s usual attitude of being “very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls.” Basquiat started his career as a graffiti artist.
In the end, though, the artwork is an homage to Basquiat and has brought incredible publicity to the exhibition which continues until January.
